ABOUT THE COURSE

 Goals
This course focuses on clinical realities, not logistics, organizational charts and the like, while providing practical information that trauma care providers can take home and implement to improve institutional disaster response plans. Information presented is physician/nurse/hospital care oriented and emphasizes that the trauma center, whether a Level 1, 2, 3 or 4, is the foundation of the disaster medical response system.

Objectives

  1. Understand the hospital's role in mass casualty response
     
  2. Develop strategies for triage, surge, drills, regional collaboration, OR and ICU overload in disaster scenarios
  3. Gain an understanding of the international approach to disaster response
  4. Apply concepts and lessons learned from previous mass casualty events and military experience
  5. Develop strategies to addressing the effects disasters have on children and the H1N1 threat
  6. Develop policies to manage in hospital decreased services and supplies in disaster situations
  7. Assure JCAHO regulations for hospital disaster response have been taken into consideration in formulating hospital policies and procedures

Educational Methods

Didactic lectures, panel discussions, audiovisual aids, course syllabus, questions and answers, and self-test.

Target Audience

The course is designed primarily for physicians, nurses and administrators in the hospital/clinical settings. The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME CREDIT

The American College of Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Accreditation will also be applied for from other appropriate medical specialty organizations.

For the purposes of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Advance Registration

Registration is limited to the first 450 registrants. To register online using a credit card, complete the online registration form found in the Registration section of this web site. If you wish to pay by check or money order, complete the Advance Registration Form and mail it to the indicated address. There is a $90.00 charge for cancellations, and no refunds after March 5, 2010.

Please note that there is a lower EARLY registration fee for paid registrations received by March 5, 2010.

The registration fee includes: participation in all sessions, course syllabus, continental breakfasts, coffee and refreshment breaks, and luncheon session.

Refunds are available, less $90.00 processing fee, up to March 5, 2010. No refunds will be given on requests postmarked after March 5. Please note that cancellations must be submitted in writing prior to March 5, 2010. Cancellations will not be accepted over the telephone. Upon receipt of your letter of cancellation, you will receive immediate confirmation, including amount of refund to be mailed to you. No refunds will be issued after March 5, 2010. We have left the 2010 information on the site, since basic format will not change.
